Down on the Allotment

My Mushrooms!

I got quite a shock when I opened the cupboard in the living room today! I have been checking my chestnut mushrooms daily and until today they had been making steady progress. Since yesterday however, they have doubled in size! Quite amazing! Am going to have mushrooms on toast tomorrow tea time.
Another amazing bargain today. I was wondering through Wilkinsons having a look in their gardening section when I spotted these gooseberry bushes for just £2.00 each. They look like 2 year olds, nice shape, lots of shoots (a bit pale but they had been in a box for a while). I bought 2 yellow and one red. The gormless girl at the checkout looked at the box and asked, "Is them onions?"... Sigh!

I am just amazed that you grew mushrooms in your cabinet. I've never eaten mushrooms on toast. I've had them fried and with steak. How do you make it so it goes on toast?

Those mushrooms are cool! Whole new take on indoor gardening. Much better than what I find growing in the fridge.

Anna, thanks for dropping by. You just chop or slice them and fry them gently in some butter in a frying pan. I season them with black pepper.

Hurrah - success!

Your picture's had the same effect as when I read The Hobbit and they stopped to have mushrooms on toast - I've got the bread read in the toaster, the butter out and I'm just going out to get some mushrooms! I bet they won't be half as tasty as yours though!

The mushrooms look great - I remember growing them in our damp under stairs cupboard when I lived at home. Perhaps I should grown them now - our cottage is quite damp and gloomy - they should do well. Great bargain with the onions!

I shant get myself a job in Wilkos, if they can't tell their onions from their cabbages! Those mushrooms look set to jump into your frying pan very soon, lovely. I love gooseberries too, crumble my favourite, I have a green variety, but would love a red. x

I'm going to try that mushroom, garlic, butter and toast. I'm sure I'll love it as I love both mushrooms and garlic toast ;)

Of course, my mushrooms aren't as fresh as yours. Although we do have pretty fresh ones in our local stores. We have a mushroom mine nearby where many of the locals work.It is called ,"Creekside Mushroom Mine". It is their compost that our local garden centers sell.
