Finally, after many attempts at growing my own mushrooms I appear to be making progress at last! These are chestnut mushrooms and it looks as if there will be many more coming in the next few weeks. The taste of freshly picked mushrooms does not compare to anything you will buy from a store anywhere. Awaits the taste test, lightly fried on plain buttered toast.

I was born 20 yards from our allotment. My parents used to 'dig for victory' and never got out of the habit. I grew up on an allotment, so growing veggies is a way of life. I am also qualified as a dog behaviourist and I have set up my own business, www.blackdogdna.com

Bravo!! That is wonderful. You've had success - I have a hunch that these are going to pass the taste test.
Try as I might, I just can't look at those mushrooms without shuddering. However, when you describe how they are prepared, it really sounds good!

Congratulations. I gather they're very difficult to grow successfully so you've done well.
We're trying mushrooms at the moment, sowed the spawn into manure in a polystyrine box in the garage almost two weeks ago... Covered it with wet newspaper and then removed that a couple of days ago to see a few little sprouty things (not many tho... considering the ammount of spawn we put in...) and covered with soil... No idea if thats the way to do it, but it's what the packet said... Guess we'll see..... :)
Congrats. In Asia last December I really got to see the difference in taste in freshly picked mushrooms and the supermarket stuff.
Congratulations! Any idea what you did differently that worked this time?
This time I bought a pre-prepared box of mushroom compost, the type you buy in a box. This time I grew it in an empty cupboard in the living room. Last time I bought a packet of mushroom spawn and prepared my own compost and left it in a dark garage outside. I think the boxes work better.

Don't they start out unusual looking, like a blob and then form individually! I've never seen them growing before. Congratulations Matron, I understand they are difficult to grow.
