Down on the Allotment

Matron grows vegetables and fruit in a Hampshire garden. I've been growing veggies since I was knee high to a grasshopper. Some traditional varieties and old favourites as well as new ideas. I share my garden with my allotment assistant Daisy the Labrador. On Twitter as @MatronsVeggies

A Very Pleasant Day

I had a perfect day out today, a trip to the Isle of Wight. I haven't been for at least 30 years or more and a visit was long overdue. The weather was perfect and we drove round the island. Lunch was taken at The Wight Mouse Inn.
A highlight of the visit was a trip to The Garlic Farm who have been winning RHS Gold medals at shows and displays all over Britain.
I've never been very successful growing garlic on my patch. I know the theory of how it should be grown but it doesn't seem to want to in my garden. With the purchase of some seed garlic today I will give it one last chance! 3 bulbs of Solent Wight, Chesnok Wight and Early Purple Wight should give me the best chance possible.
I didn't buy any Elephant Garlic, a bit of a novelty item but I like my garlic hot and fiery and I hear this is a bit on the mild side.
And finally my delightful travelling companions today, making sure that we enjoyed every minute of the day!
This is by way of another reminder to join in Matron's Dogblog. Please email me a picture of your canine garden helper by 28th September and I will be sure to add it to the post.

Your trip to the Isle of Wight looks lovely...and all that wonderful garlic at The Garlic Farm...I'll bet the air smelled delicious...the only kind of garlic I've ever managed to have grow, was Elephant Garlic and it was indeed milder...I'm sure you'll have success with the garlic you chose...I'm still trying to get my dachshund, Baron, to stand still long enough (in my little garden) for me to get a picture...*smile*

Dirt Princess - sadly not my dogs, I don't think I have the energy to keep up with these two!

Nooooooo , i wish I knew you were going I would have love to have gone .

They are my dealers of choice , PRovence and Solent did well in my garden and the Chesnok is already planted out.

When i squished them for cooking they were heady and sticky and tasted awesome just raw , mmmmmmmmmmmm.

Garlic was the success story of my garden over the winter.

I'd recommend it to anyone , who misses growing things during winter.

I love the Isle of Wight and visit it a lot as my brother lives in Shanklin. The Garlic farm is great and the Early Purple tastes wonderful. Did you try the garlic ice cream when you were there?!

Beautiful place, gorgeous dogs, and yummy looking garlic! It won't be long before it is time to plant the garlic and multiplier onion bulbs into the garden. I am expanding my elephant garlic planting because I enjoyed the small amount I did last year so well.

I was just reading a book and it mentioned the Isle of Wight! What a coincidence. I love your blog.

The Isle of Wight looks beautiful! It must be time to sow the garlic if you are buying seed, this will be our third year trying, so far without success.Like you we have the theory but not the bulbs to show for it.
What if anything will you do differently with the garlic seed this year?

I never do better than disappointingly with garlic either. Doesn't matter if I do spring or autumn planting. I get titchy bulbs. I buy it now, and use the ground for something I know will grow!

What a pretty place! I haven't had much luck with garlic either, so sad because I love it. Good luck with yours!
Your dogs are beautiful!

The first picture took my breath away! It's such a pleasure to live close to the big water. The garlic is a dream, and the dogs are just... so hugable! Hello to them from my Amur (he is in my today's post).

Sounds like you had a great time! Love those chocolate doggies. Now I must find a pic of Tara helping me (from the frying pan into the fire mostly) in the garden to send to you for the Dogblog.

Your pictures looked very peaceful. And a relaxing day that involves food or gardening in any way is always a pleasure. :D

Hope it grows better for you than for me!!

PS 'Chesnok' is the Russian word for garlic. Out of interest.

Your day out on the ocean makes me miss the ocean so much. To get the garlic is a bonus. Good luck growing it this year.

I saw the tomatillos below and yes, I'd say they are a most fun plant. They are not well known in my neck of the woods but I tell you I'd love to grow them.

P.S. Did you get my dog picture?
