Down on the Allotment

Matron grows vegetables and fruit in a Hampshire garden. I've been growing veggies since I was knee high to a grasshopper. Some traditional varieties and old favourites as well as new ideas. I share my garden with my allotment assistant Daisy the Labrador. On Twitter as @MatronsVeggies

Tasty Summer Tomatoes!

Now this is a picture that will bring back happy memories when I look at it next February or March! I made a tomato salad this afternoon. The ingredients are the best of everything! Fresh picked tomatoes, extra virgin olive oyl, balsamic vinegar, buffalo mozzarella... needless to say it was divine! Just think of those long, long Winter months when all we have to eat here is crunchy, bland, tasteless, awful supermarket tomatoes. Enjoy them while you can!

We won't be eating supermarket tomatoes though will we - we'll be eating delicious home grown leeks, cabbage, celeriac and other seasonal delicacies!

I hope you didn't eat that work of art Matron! I won't eat supermarket tomatoes because I find them tasteless.

Hi matron,it looks delicious and the colours make it tempting too, I think I spy an ingredient you did'nt mention, the basil which I would hazard a guess is also homegrown.

Now that looks like the totally perfect lunch ~ the thought of those long fresh tomatoless months to come is rather bleak :(

Gosh that looks so good!

I love tomatoes and mozzarella! And the combo is just as good if grilled and served on toast ;-)

Your blog is a bit of an inspiiration! I tried growing a few veggies for the first time this year and was super chuffed when I managed to grow courgette! Mind you, that's all I have managed so far!!

That's cruel, dangling such gorgeous looking food in front of people who can't quite taste it... Lovely looking toms, what varieties? I'm trying to pick what to grow next year.

Brilliant looking tomato salad. We actually do not eat the supermarket tomatoes... just go into an extended period of time without tomatoes on the menu (other than preserved which is minimal this year since my tomato harvest was minimal). Saying goodbye to the tomato season is really a tough one as a result. We are still getting fresh tomatoes though from the ones I have pulled off the vine and which are ripening inside. Should get a few more weeks of fresh eating before the tomato season is officially closed for 2010.

Janet - red ones are Dombito, the yellow are an American variety Golden Jubilee.

Glad your tomatoes are tasty. Something odd has happened to ours and they aren't anywhere near as tasty as they have been in other years. Maybe the sun is coming at the wrong time. Don't know!

Ach... that pesky blight means that this year I got very few fresh toms - lots of green tomato chutney to get through though instead!
